Chapter Eighteen

Alex was up and ready for work earlier than usual on Saturday morning. She decided to fill a couple of plates with cookies, thinking they might come in handy if she went to interview some of her suspects again. She had read you created a sense of obligation when you gave a person something. She hoped her little psychological trick would help generate a feeling of reciprocity today.

She’d had a restless night worrying if Hanna was really thinking about leaving Murder and Mayhem. Alex had enjoyed making chocolates the other night, but she couldn’t do that and run the bookstore. How would she deal with being alone again?

Shaking off the negativity, she decided to spend the day thinking more about Christmas, since she’d be going shopping later, but first, she’d get scones for herself and her crew.

Unfortunately, Sam didn’t have time to talk this morning. It seemed half of Harriston was in Cookies ’n Crumbs, which was unusual so early on a Saturday morning. Maybe people were still discussing Jane’s murder. There seemed to be two main camps, one that believed the sheriff had the right person in jail and another that thought there was still a dangerous robber or a psychopath on the loose. Most people had dismissed Jane’s true-crime theory as another wild idea from a declining elderly woman.

Alex was able to get some of her bookkeeping done and decided she would go see Oliver again today. She needed to find out exactly where he had been the evening Jane was murdered so she could, once and for all, cross him off the suspect list.

Twenty minutes before opening, Maggie arrived. Two minutes later Hanna arrived with Watson, who was happy and excited to see Maggie. After the dog got some attention from Maggie, Hanna settled her in the conference room. “Do you mind keeping an eye on Watson later when Alex leaves?” she asked Maggie. “I’ll be in the kitchen until midafternoon.”

“Of course not. She’s family. We’ll have a great time.”

Customers started arriving as soon as the doors were unlocked. It was amazing how many people left their shopping until the last weekend before Christmas. A few people still asked Alex about finding Jane’s body and whether Zach had done it. For the most part, Alex remained noncommittal in her responses.

Midmorning, Yvonne walked into the shop and approached Alex. “It’s warming up a bit out there. I’d like to get a few novels to keep me busy over the holidays. Jane often mentioned her love for murder mysteries and true crime, though I never really understood the attraction to reading about murder, but I’ve decided to give it a try. Would you help me find a few novels I might like?”

“Of course. First, we need to figure out the genre you prefer.”

After some discussion, Alex suggested Yvonne try a James Patterson novel and a cozy mystery. “Once you’ve read them, you’ll know if you have a preference, and then I can recommend some more.”

Maggie approached Alex. “I’m sorry to interrupt.
